Tofu Thursday: Tofu in Oyster Sauce

Dear Hubby requested for this dish. A very good alternative for meaty meals. Luckily, an officemate mentioned that a magtataho always delivers taho and tofu to their house.  Yes, Manong's tofu is really fresh and smells good. Three blocks cost Php 100 or Php35 if you'll buy only one block .This dish only costs less than Php100 and is good for sharing with 4 people.

Ingredients:
1 tofu block , cut into cubes
1 clove garlic, crushed
1 white onion, chopped
half-block butter ( or olive oil)
30g oyster sauce
Oil for frying
2 spring onions, sliced
pepper to taste
1 siling labuyo ( optional)

Procedure:

  1. Deep fry tofu then set aside.
  2. Melt butter in a pan, add a tablespoon of the used oil to avoid butter from burning.
  3. Saute garlic and onion.
  4. Add oyster sauce. You may add a little water if it tastes too salty.
  5. Add fried tofu.
  6. Season with pepper and simmer. If you want it more spicy, add siling labuyo.
  7. Garnish with chopped spring onion.
  8. Serve with lots of love.
Nutritional finds:

Tofu - Made from soybean curd. Rich source of protein, iron and calcium and helps lower bad cholesterol.
Onion - Both the red and white onion contain the flavonoid quercetin, an antioxidant that might protect you from heart disease, stroke and certain cancers. There are studies also that say eating raw onion regularly is one of the most effective remedies for asthma due to its anti-inflammatory compound. Good luck to the smell of your breath :) But the white one which tastes a little sweet is tolerable.
Butter - A dairy product frequently made from cow's milk that must be consumed moderately due to high fat content. If you have olive oil available, you may use it instead of butter in this dish.
Oil -   Here is a helpful guide in choosing a good cooking oil.
Oyster Sauce -  A Chinese favorite made from oyster extracts and got a little amount of protein. It is rich in sodium. The reason why I no longer added salt to the dish.
